Born in a poor fishering family, his father died when he was young, Pham Huu The had to work hard to earn a living and to support his mother. The legend has it that when he was 15 years old, once he carried water home, he saw two white buffaloes fighting on the riverbank. He used the shoulder pole to strike the buffaloes, they were frightened and run away. He picked up two hair of the buffaloes, dropped them into the water, the water forked, he assumed that they were divine hair and swallowed them. Since then he became sturdy, extraordinarily intelligent, swimming in the water as if he were walking on the earth.
The above legend was only a way of explanation for the excellent health and talent of Nguyen Huu The which were gained through practical life. Nguyen Huu The was recruited to be a house servant for Tran Hung Dao due to his swimming talent. He deserved credit for the two resistance wars against Nguyen invaders, he was acknowledged by the history as a famous general. His hometown's fishermen were very poor, they did not even have an inch of ground to dry the casting-net. Therefore, before he died, he proposed Tran King to give to each household 72 square meters of land used for casting-net drying without paying taxes. The King approved and enforced the law until Nguyen dynasty.
After Yet Kieu died, people set up a temple and honoured him to be the tutelary god, his commemoration festival was held on 15 January. As usual, the festival began from 10 to 20 January, prior to the Revolution, Ha Bi had 8 families and 9 fishermen. Each fisherman went to different areas to earn a living, they only came back on Tet holidays.
